The striker had made his first appearance for the Owls a week previously in the opening game of the 1986/87 season at Charlton, but waited a week before announcing himself to his new fans.
Coming off the bench for Nigel Worthington, Hirst scored within a few minutes in what would end up in a 2-2 draw with Everton on August 25, 1986. Here’s who he played alongside that day and what they went on to do.
1. Martin Hodge
Made over 200 appearances for Wednesday after signing from Everton sjowing form that saw him just miss out on a place in England 1986 World Cup squad. Left the Owls in 1988 had had spells at Leicester, Hartlepool, Rochdale and Plymouth before mocing into coaching, initially back at Wednesday. 2. Paul Hart
Was at Wednesday towards the end of hs career and left at the end of this partcular season. Played for Birmingham and Notts County before moving into coaching, beginning his managerial career at Chesterfield before joining former club Leeds and then another of hs ex-clubs Forest in coaching youth players. 3. Lawrie Madden
Madden played for Wednesday between 1983 and 1991, scoring two goals in 212 appearances for the club. The Hackney-born defender also starred for eight other clubs, including Mansfield Town, Boston United, Charlton Athletic, Millwall, Leicester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Darlington and Chesterfield. 4. Chris Morris
Signed by Jack Charlton as a youngster Morris made 70-odd appearances for the Owls before moving to Celtic where he won a host of trophies, including the league and cup double. While there, Charlton picked him for the Republic of Ireland, playing in Euro 88 and the 1990 World Cup. Move to Middlesbrough where he stayed until 1997.
