Sheffield Wednesday’s worst enemy? Sheffield Wednesday…

Some of the stats to come out of the current season are remarkably depressing, but possibly the most telling one is their ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
After last night’s draw with Huddersfield, Wednesday have dropped a whopping 25 points from winning positions so far this season. If they see out even half of those games, it’d paint a very different picture at the bottom of the Championship table.

Hide AdThe fact that they’ve won a grand total of zero points from losing positions has been widely spoken about, as has the fact that they’ve only scored two equalisers all season (even though they lost both those games anyway).
But there’s more…
If you took away stoppage time from the Championship, Wednesday would be out of the relegation zone and three points clear of the bottom three. Only Wycombe Wanderers have conceded more goals in the final 10 minutes of matches – including added time – than the Owls (14) and no team’s scored less in the same period (2).
Even more terrifyingly, if you were to stop all of this season’s games at half time, Wednesday would be TWELFTH in the league. They’d be comfortably midtable because they’ve scored more first half goals than 10 other teams – the problem is that leads don’t really mean anything anymore.
Is it a fitness thing? Do they run out of steam? Or they just unable to physically see out a game of football? Their second half stats are appalling…

Hide AdWednesday are the only club in the entire division with single figure second half goals (9) this season, and only Wycombe (34) have conceded more than the Owls (30). If you took away first halves, they’d be rock bottom with a goal difference of -21.
On top of that, the Owls top the red card charts with seven (six of which have been straight reds, and four of which have been in the first half of games) - last night it was an own goal that cost them two points – the latest in a long list of mistakes.
A lot of the time, Sheffield Wednesday beat themselves.
