The 26-year-old forward scored three times for the Owls while on loan from the Lancashire club last season and is said to have impressed Wednesday boss Garry Monk with his athleticism and attitude.
Windass, son of former Owls loanee Dean, recovered from a thigh injury to play a key part in the club’s season run-in.

Windass is likely to be available on a cut-price deal as the cash-strapped Latics continue in their mission to slash their wage bill following administration woes, a points deduction and subsequent relegation to League One.
Monk has spoken previously about his admiration for the Wigan man, who was referred to the club via the manager’s long-time colleague James Beattie, a former boss of the forward’s at Accrington Stanley.
Asked about Windass’ future last month, Monk said: “We will have to see at the end of this period of games where we are at and what we can do. We will have those conversations possibly.

Should a deal be done he would join 19-year-old former Manchester City midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru in joining the Owls on a permanent basis as Monk attempts to put his stamp on a squad he identified was in need of revolution.
The Star revealed last week that The Owls are battling city rivals Sheffield United for the signature of Dele-Bashiru’s close friend and former teammate Keyendrah Simmonds, a 19-year-old attacker with England youth experience.
“We need to move the squad into a more younger, dynamic quantity in the squad,” Monk said outlining his transfer plans to last month. “That’s what we need, that’s how football is, and I think that’s how you can get the best out of a squad.”
