Owls players left Hillsborough after Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Millwall with no indication that the clash would be their last under the 41-year-old, despite a run of form that sees them second-bottom of the Championship with three wins in their 11 matches.
It seems players were given no prior knowledge ahead of a statement released by the club at 9pm on Monday evening that Monk had been sacked along with his coaching team.

The club appointed Monk during last season’s September international break and may well be looking to repeat the trick by bringing in a new manager ahead of their next match, a trip to Preston North End on November 21.
The club received a big boost last week when their 12-point deduction for misconduct was halved on appeal by an independent disciplinary commission.
A win over Bournemouth and Saturday’s stalemate took them off the bottom of the table but it was not enough to save Monk from his departure after four defeats in 10 days last month.
