Wednesday face Cardiff City on Saturday as the 2020/21 Championship season gets underway, and I’ve a go at picking my team as Garry Monk’s side seek a winning start to the new season in Wales.
1. GK - Cameron Dawson
The goalkeeper battle will be interesting this season, but Dawson looked accomplished and confident against Walsall, and you can’t really drop somebody after a clean sheet and penalty shootout heroics, can you? Photo: Steve Ellis
2. CB - Dominic Iorfa
For me, Iorfa will probably start whenever he is fit and available this season. Was comfortably the club’s best defender last season, and I’d expect him to keep up that kind of form in the year ahead. Is obviously a physical presence too. Photo: Steve Ellis
3. CB - Tom Lees
Lees has looked a lot more himself since returning to the side after lockdown, and was once again comfortable against the Saddlers as he marshalled things nicely from the back. Wins a lot of balls in the air and on the ground, the lack of captaincy may help him as well. Photo: Steve Ellis
4. CB - Julian Borner
I think Chey Dunkley will probably come into the XI at some point once he’s fully fit, but one of Börner’s key plus points is that he’s a left-footed centre back and very suited to the LCB position. He wasn’t good in the Carabao Cup, I reckon I’d go for consistency in the backline if possible. Photo: Steve Ellis
