The newly promoted club’s record transfer signing, having completed a £23.5m move from Liverpool three years ago, Brewster has not made a senior appearance since damaging a hamstring nine months ago.
Although Paul Heckingbottom insists the complaint is not a recurrence of the issue which also forced Brewster to miss the end of the previous campaign, the United manager is aware of the effect another prolonged period on the sidelines could have upon Brewster’s career.

With that in mind, despite reminding he possesses all the attributes required to become a force to be reckoned with in the Premier League, Heckingbottom plans to ease rather than thrust the youngster back into action.
“We’ll do it when Rhi’s ready,” he said, when last asked to assess Brewster’s progress. “Because he’s been out for a while, we don’t want to overload straight away. That’s something we’ve got to be very mindful of. So we’ll do it properly.”
Ideally, as United prepare for the first friendly of their summer warm-up programme, that would see Brewster make a series of cameo appearances ahead of next month’s Premier League opener against Crystal Palace before being introduced from the bench. However, after being granted permission to join in the fitness exercises United are performing at their training complex, United’s medical department will continue to gauge how Brewster’s body is reacting through their early sessions.
