An elderly woman has been left fighting for her life after she was hit by a car on busy Barnsley road on Thursday afternoon.

South Yorkshire Police said they received a call at 12.47pm on December 3 for reports of a road traffic collision involving a pedestrian and a car on Hoyland Road in Barnsley.

A police spokesperson said: “It is believed that an 80 year-old woman was involved in a collision with a red Nissan Juke.

“The woman was taken to hospital by ambulance and remains in a critical condition. Her injuries are believed to be life-threatening.”

At 2.14pm today, South Yorkshire Police Operations Support tweeted that emergency services were dealing with a road traffic collision at the Barnsley town.

Motorists were warned of delays in the area.

They said: “The road will remain closed whilst we carry out our investigations at the scene.

“Please avoid the area and plan alternative routes.”
