Hide AdAnd on Saturday and Sunday, just for this weekend, the council is opening the old waste transfer station at Tinsley Park Road between 9.30am and 5.30pm for people to bring bags of small household rubbish or garden waste.
Buses were forced to divert their services earlier this week when huge queues of traffic formed to use the tip on Blackstock Road.
And Coun Paul Turpin recently disclosed Sheffield had some of the shortest opening hours among core cities, saying his Gleadless Valley ward had become “the dumping ground of south Sheffield”.
The council said it had been in discussion for two months with Veolia and the workforce trying to find a solution.

Hide AdCoun Mark Jones, Cabinet member for environment, told a meeting: “We are continuing to evaluate if we have any sites that we can mobilise on a temporary basis but this is looking unlikely because of the magnitude of planning and licencing requirements.
“Longley Avenue used to be the one that received the greatest number of visits but over the pandemic that moved to Blackstock Road, which is a very small site that serves a very large portion of our city.”
He warned extended opening hours may disturb residents living near tips. “Blackstock Road is not easy to get across while cars are queuing there and it’s a bus route.
“We feel the increased hours in the evening will help spread the burden but we will have to monitor this because it could increase the torment of residents.
“That’s one of the reasons why the council has been exploring additional sites, trailing pop up sites and increasing access to the other four sites.”
