The city’s combination of gritty industrial heritage, the romantic landscape of the Peak District and atmospheric brutalist architecture like the iconic Park Hill flats have long made it an attractive option for film crews.
But how many of these settings do you recognise from films and TV dramas in which Sheffield has played a starring role over the years?
1. Four Lions
This 2010 dark comedy, directed by Chris Morris, followed a group of young men living in Sheffield and their inept efforts at terrorism. Scenes were shot at locations across Sheffield, including Meersbrook Park (pictured), The Wicker, The Moor and a terrace near the Tinsley Viaduct Photo: Marie Caley
2. When Saturday Comes
Sheffield United fan Sean Bean got to live out his fantasy in this classic football drama as brewery worker Jimmy Muir, who enjoys a meteoric rise through the leagues to play for the Blades. Bramall Lane features, naturally, as does Hallam FC's Sandygate Road ground, which is the world's oldest, and what was the Stones brewery (pictured) on Rutland Road, along with numerous other locations across the city Photo: Sheffield Newspapers
3. Threads
This chilling 1984 BBC drama showed the catastrophic impact of a nuclear strike on Sheffield, something which seemed all too possible at the time. Among the locations featured were The Moor (pictured), the Nottingham House pub in Broomhill, Sheffield City Hall and the long-since-demolished Tinsley cooling towers. Photo: Scott Merrylees
4. '71
Sheffield doubled as 1970s Belfast in Warp Films' harrowing 2014 drama about The Troubles. The city's famous Park Hill flats (pictured) stood in for the notorious Divis Flats, which have since been largely demolished Photo: Scott Merrylees
