More winter tennis on way in Beauchief
Sheffield Council has approved planning permission for the club, on Cockshutt Avenue, to put up 12 six-metre-high lighting columns.
Two of the club’s existing seven tennis courts are already illuminated and the organisation has been given the go-ahead to add floodlights to the three courts closest to the clubhouse.

Hide AdApproving the plans, council officers said the fact that the site lies within the Green Belt was taken into consideration.
But they added: “This proposal aims to increase the usage of the tennis courts by making more of the courts available on a year-round basis rather than just in the summer months.
“Arguably therefore, this proposal will lead to increased use of the Green Belt for leisure purposes.”
However, a condition was added stipulating that the new floodlights can only be used until 9pm - half an hour earlier than the existing lights’ cut-off time - to avoid causing nuisance to nearby residents.
Sport England has already offered £62,150 towards the project’s total cost of £90,150.
