New photos show the extent of how a waste fire has been smouldering on a South Yorkshire Industrial Estate for over a fortnight.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue has been recalled to the scene at Kiveton Park Industrial Estate to help combat the problem.

They were first called to the site in Rotherham on September 21 to help fight a large scale waste fire.

Although the fire was deemed extinguished the following day, the problem is so large that waste buried deep in the rubbish pile has continued to smoulder in places, leading to several seats of fire reemerging in recent days.

South Yorkshire Police has now released new photos of the scene after they were recalled on October 4.

More images have also been sent to The Star by members of the public and staff at the scene.

Nearby residents have been told to shut their windows where possible to avoid smoke, and many households have complained of blackened windows and a ‘strong, intolerable’ stench of fumes that leaves them struggling to sleep at night.

Motorists travelling through the area are also advised to keep their windows closed and turn off their air conditioning.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: “These fires tend to burn for a long time just by the fact that there is so much waste, and often the seat of the fire can be very deep. We continue to monitor the area.”

Safety advice issued by the fire service say that anyone who suffer from ongoing symptoms they believe are linked to the fire should call NHS 111.

A Rotherham Council spokesperson said: “Our priority is the safety of local residents. We are working with our partners including the Environment Agency, who regulate waste sites, and the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, to try and resolve the situation and protect people’s quality of life.”
