Fire service pays tribute to Meadowhall victims after 30 firefighters battled to save them

Tommy and Josh Hydes were travelling in a white Mercedes GLS when it hit railings on Meadowhall Way and plunged into the River Don below on Saturday night.
The two men – who were uncle and nephew – died in the crash.

Hide AdAn investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is under way.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “At around 7.10pm on Saturday, firefighters were called to reports of a car in the River Don near Meadowhall, Sheffield.
“Upon arrival they found two men were trapped in a vehicle that had left a bridge and entered fast moving river water.
“This was a very challenging incident but our crews worked quickly to extricate two casualties from the car before ensuring nobody else was trapped inside.

Hide Ad“Unfortunately the two men did not survive the crash, making this an extremely tragic incident, and our thoughts are with their friends and families at this very sad time.”
Crews from Elm Lane and Rivelin attended along with two swift water rescue crews from Aston Park and Edlington and two heavy rescue crews from Parkway and Tankersley – around 30 firefighters in total.
Police and ambulance crews were also on scene, as were Meadowhall security staff.
Social media has been flooded with tributes to Tommy and Josh and flowers have been left at the crash scene.
