Abbeydale Road Parklet: Tiny Sheffield green area opens with community party

“It was a community event,” said Luke Rose from Abbeydale Street Trees, an organisation working with local people to establish a green corridor in the area.
“We were celebrating the opening of the Abbeydale Road Parklet which is a new green space on Abbeydale Road which is occupying two parking spaces on Avenue Road.
“It was more broadly a community event to celebrate the road itself and the independent businesses on the road.
“We had family-friendly activities such as circus skills workshops, local history walks along Abbeydale Road, a local author doing poetry workshops and live music.
“One of the local businesses, Cole’s Corner, hosted an after party with a magician and live music.
“It was really good – we had a mixture of people who knew about the event who came along and people passing by who stopped to see what was going on.”
The parklet, a small area of planters and seating, was funded by the city council’s Economic Recovery Fund.
Luke said: “The plan is that it will be there for three years. It was constructed by Strip the Willow, a local joinery business. They’ll be maintaining it.”
He explained that the parklet could be left in place longer if it becomes popular or it can be moved on.
“It’s really transformative. If you look at what was there before, it was just used for parking,” said Luke. “Seeing the transformation at the event on Saturday was really great.”
