Troubled Sheffield man jailed for breaching restraining order by visiting his father

Sheffield Magistrates’ Court - sitting at Sheffield Crown Court - heard on May 11 how Mark Maloney, aged 37, of Skelton Way, Sheffield, visited his father on March 15 and May 9 at Southey Avenue, Sheffield, asking for tobacco and cash to buy alcohol.
Kirsty Pearson, defending, said Maloney went to his father’s home on March 15 in drink and he refused to leave and he told police he had been to his father’s address to ask for money to buy alcohol.

Hide AdShe added that on May 9 he visited his father’s home after phoning and after being told not to visit and when he arrived he was told not to come in the property.
The defendant admitted two counts of breaching the restraining order.
Hester Russell, defending, said Maloney, who has a difficult up-and-down relationship with his father, had contacted him for tobacco and cash.
She added Maloney showed police he had received phone calls from his father.

Hide AdMaloney told the court: “I know it has to stop. Please believe me. I’m going to make it stop.
“If you send me back to prison you send me back to square one.”
District Judge Naomi Redhouse sentenced Maloney to 20-weeks of custody and ordered him to pay a £122 victim surcharge.
She told Maloney: “Use the time in custody to come off alcohol and think about how you are going to cope in a society that accepts alcohol on every street corner.”
