Darby initially denied any knowledge of the weapon but his DNA was found on the trigger, according to Mr Holland, and the defendant even claimed this was because he had spat in the bag but a forensic expert found no evidence of saliva.
The defendant, who has previous convictions, pleaded guilty to possessing a prohibited firearm. He also admitted two counts of possessing class A drugs with intent to supply including crack-cocaine and heroin.
Mr Holland said Darby had been searched in February 2020, and found with the drugs and £143.60 in cash after he had been a passenger in a car that was stopped by the police for driving erratically.
