Sheffield Crown Court heard on January 20 how Peter Codman, aged 38, of Longley Hall Rise, Longley, Sheffield, was caught outside the prison walls at HMP Lindholme, at Hatfield Woodhouse, Doncaster, with over six grammes of cannabinoid drug spice, valued at £65, and over nine grammes of cannabis, valued at £90.
Katy Rafter, prosecuting, said HMP Lindholme initially received information that two males were attempting to throw packages into the prison grounds on April 25, 2018, but when they were approached the males claimed they were looking for somewhere to go fishing.

Hide AdMs Rafter added that five days later one of the males, who was Codman, returned and he was found to have a plank, wire-cutters, a phone and five cling-film wrap packages of spice and three Kinder egg containers with cannabis.
Codman, who has previous convictions, pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing drugs with intent to supply.
Amy Earnshaw, defending, said Codman has spent some of the intervening time remanded in custody.
She added that Codman, who cares for his poorly mother, had been struggling with mental health issues and debts including a drug-debt and a debt linked to his brother which he needed to pay off and he feared for the safety of his family.

Hide AdMs Earnshaw said Codman now lives with his partner at Longley Hall Rise and is on a methadone prescription to wean himself off drugs and he wants to stop offending.
Judge Roger Thomas told Codman the drugs had been packaged in such a way to get them into the prison by throwing them over the fence or by other means.
He added the value of drugs in prisons far outweighs their value on the streets.
Judge Thomas said: “Drugs in prison are a huge difficulty and problem and are entirely and utterly counter-productive to the prison system.”
He sentenced Codman to 27 months of custody.
