Fire crews including six fire engines were called at 9.50pm last night to Arthur's Waste Management on Parkwood Road, Neepsend last night after a number of piles of waste caught fire and sent plumes of thick, black smoke through the city.
Firefighters worked overnight to battle the blaze and a spokesman for the fire service said this morning shortly before 6.30am that it still had one main jet and one ground monitor in use, meaning ‘extensive firefighting activities’ were ongoing.
